5 Things We Learned from Manchester City’s 3-0 Win over Sunderland.

1. A Statement Performance

Manchester City delivered a statement performance with a dominant 3-0 win over Sunderland. Goals from Rúben Dias, Joško Gvardiol and the in-form Phil Foden sealed the result, putting to rest some of the nerves City fans carried into the match. After edging past Leeds and surviving a thriller against Fulham, both victories lacking conviction, City fans had every reason to be sceptical heading into this one - Especially against a Sunderland side that looked capable of causing real problems. But from the first whistle Man City looked dominant.

2. Phil Foden, Sign That Contract

Erling Haaland committing his future to Manchester City until 2034 was massive, but it's now it’s time for Phil Foden to follow. Once again, Foden delivered a world-class performance, picking up a goal and an assist and completely dictating the tempo of City’s attack. He has now produced six goal contributions in his last three games, two per game. To those who still insist City are a “one-man team” with Haaland, we hope you enjoyed watching that Phil Foden materclass.

3. Rayan Cherki: Signing of the Summer

What more needs to be said? His chemistry with Phil Foden is incredible, becoming one of the most exciting duos in world football. Cherki now has 11 goal contributions in his last seven starts, and he added another two assists against Sunderland, including that outrageous Rabona assist for Foden’s goal. It will easily go down as one of the best goals of the season. There is no excuse for him not to be starting every match.

4. Rúben Dias or Vincent Kompany?

It’s impossible to talk about this match without giving Rúben Dias his flowers. His stunning long-range strike to make it 1–0 instantly drew comparisons to Vincent Kompany’s iconic goal against Leicester in the 2018/19 run-in, and with good reason. It was the kind of goal that sets the tone for the entire team. Beyond the strike, Dias was rock-solid defensively and helped City secure a clean sheet. After weeks of inconsistency at the back, this was a performance City badly needed from their defensive leader.

5. The Two Point Gap

What a difference a few days can make. Arsenal’s dramatic 2–1 loss, sealed by an Emiliano Buendía winner in the 95th minute - Combined with City’s dominant 3-0 victory over Sunderland has reshaped the standings. The gap at the top has now shrunk to just two points, with Arsenal on 33 and Manchester City on 31. This comes only days after pundits and fans alike were writing off City’s chances and labelling this season a “one-horse race.” But if there’s anything we’ve learned over the years, it’s that the title race never truly begins until the second half of the season.
