The Spain international endured a challenging spell during the 2024–25 season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in September, an injury that ruled him out for the majority of the campaign. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner made his long-awaited return as a late substitute in Manchester City’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth towards the end of last season. Since then, Rodri’s comeback has been a gradual process - while moments of rust have been visible, his rhythm and influence are steadily returning as he continues to build match sharpness and regain fitness.

According to a report from TBR Football, Manchester City have now opened talks with Rodri’s camp over a new long-term contract. The discussions are said to be progressing positively, with confidence and willingness on both sides that an agreement will soon be reached.

Rodri’s current deal runs until 2027, but City are eager to reward the Ballon d’Or winner for his pivotal role under Pep Guardiola by extending his stay even further. Sources close to the situation indicate that the club view Rodri as an essential part of their long-term project, both on and off the pitch.

TBR Football also reports that City are looking to finalise extensions for both Rodri and Phil Foden before January. The club has already tied down several of its core players in recent months, including Erling Haaland, Rúben Dias, Nico O’Reilly, Savinho, and Rico Lewis, as part of a broader plan to secure the next generation of talent at the Etihad.

Despite persistent speculation linking Rodri with Real Madrid, City sources have insisted that any external interest is not a factor in negotiations. Talks remain entirely focused on securing the midfielder’s future in Manchester, with optimism growing that an announcement could arrive before the new year.
